As usual, Christmas passed quickly this year. I hope everyone had a good holidays and found some HDTVs, blu-ray players, or smartphones underneath the Christmas tree. I didn’t get anything that exciting, but I did get a really nice printer. It’s a Canon MX860 networked printer and its significantly better than what I had before. I also received a few blu-rays including Star Trek, Hangover, and District 9.

You will have to use the sound output to go to your Tuner or Amplifier that will power the speakers. It would be good if you had a sound card that has RCA output. Otherwise you will have to use the little jack plug in with a connector to change it to RCA jack.
The computer can't push enough power to those speakers. Look at your PC speakers, even they have internal amplifier (the computer isn't powering them) they have to plug into the wall or a USB port to get power to the internal amplifier.

I have a JVC HD-52886G, a JVC TH-C7 Home Theater System, and a PSP. The trouble is that I can get audio for the home theater system and the PSP but nothing from the cable tv. The cable box is in from the wall and only a video out to the TV. Doesn't seem to make a differnce with the audio connected. My thought is that the cable has no way to talk to the tv but I don't have any other inputs on the HTS. I'm out of ideas. I know this is a bit vague but any suggestions?

You got it right, connect the HDMI to the receiver, and the HDMI output of the receiver to the TV. Digital signals are not affected by being passed through multiple device as long as its just a passthrough.

As I understood it, the more times the signal is decoded by a device, the weaker the signal gets. So, if I am hooking up a PS3, I should connect an HDMI to my Audio Receiver and then to my TV instead of running the HDMI to my TV and the optical to my receiver ? Just making sure I have it straight.

Thanks,

Actually, its the opposite with HDMI as HDMI requires video to go along with any audio signal. You could have vidoe by itself though. One of the benifts of HDMI is that you can have audio and vidoe on the same cable so that's what's typically done. Some people have older receivers without HDMI so I've seen cases where the HDMI was run to the TV for video and an optical cable was run to the receiver for audio.

I am connecting a system for a friend and I have a question. I have always been told that you send the video signals to the video devices (ie. DVD Player to TV) and you send the audion signals to the audio devices (ie. DVD Player to Audio Receiver). Now with HDMI are you still supposed to do this ? Or do you carry the audio/video signals throughout and have the signal decoded an extra time before it gets to its destination. Just trying to bring myself up to speed!

Thanks,

It's not too difficult to connect a PC to a receiver. HDMI is the easiest way if it worked, but sometimes it too much hassle. IF HDMI doesn't work, try using an optical connection for sound.

Good evening friends.

Due to continuously changing formats ( .wmv, .mpg, .mpeg, divx, then xvid, and now .mkv).

I was hoping if it was possible to play a say .MKV/.avi movie in my PC with VLC player or any other player and stream it to my Home Theatre and get the output of sound from home theatre speakers and the video from the TV connected with the home theatre.

If someone knows how to do achieve this please enlighten me. I also need to know the products needed to achieve this task.

I am guessing conecting my PC somehow to the HDMI port of Onkyo AV receivers might achieve this task, but since I do not own these products I am not sure.

Please help if you know how.

If matto it right and you don't have enough HDMI inputs on the HTiB, you can proably use an optical audio out from your TV (if it has one) and connect it to the HTiB input.

Do you have your HDMI inputs/outputs connected correctly? The out of the HTiB should go into the "in" of the TV. The out of the DVR should go into the in of the HTiB. The same with the Apple TV. How many HDMI inputs does your HTiB have? I'm guessing it doesn't have enough which made you connect them to the TV instead which is why you don't have sound.

My components:
Panasonic SA-BT300 HTiB with HDMI ports
Panasonic TC-54PS14 HDTV with HDMI ports
DirecTv HR22-100 HD satelite receiver/DVR with HDMI ports
AppleTv 3.0 with HDMI ports
Apple Airport Extreme Wi-Fi router
I find that I still have to use audio (using fiber optic cables) cables to get any sound. WTF? I thought that HDMI cables carried sound and video. I think I just don't have the HDMI settings correct on the different menus on all the different components. Any advice out there? Thanks

Motorola recommended calling *228 and hitting option 2 first. However, that didn't work for me. Once I got my new one, it hasn't crashed once.

Has anyone sucesffuly tried Windows 7 on their HTPC? I like Windows 7 enough that I wouldn't mind updating my HTPC's Window's XP ...but I'm worried about any HDMI issues that may come up. I heard Window's 7 has more restrictions. I use my HTPC as a blu-ray player so any issues with HDMI including 7.1 master audio would be a deal breaker for me. Also my HTPC goes through a receiver which I'm not sure how Window's 7 would treat the receiver.

Thanks, and couldn't agree more! I think what's been missing from home automation is the ability to control it away from home. Most people don't have a huge house so they have no use for home automation ...unless they need to use outside of their home.

Since the early days of WinMo, I've been looking for a mobile platform to remotely control multiple home devices around my LAN. I picked up Android late last year and knew that this would finally be it, just had to learn Java.

Just did a quick search and stumbled on this project. It's funny that you all have summed up every piece of that idea. From remotely monitoring networked (motion detecting, infrared) webcams to selecting streaming media based upon the availability in a room. This is the future of the home network and Android has the flexibility to fully realize the administration. Keep up the good work!

There might be a market for built HTPCs. The challenge is the pace of change as media continues its convergence. I've never used the most current OS in my computers. I am going to Win 7 now so I might get 5 or 6 years of operability.

Glad to have you here. Unless you want to spend some money on a component capture card, you might want to stick with the Dish DVR. I tend to use my HTPC capture card as way to record video I want to keep. The Dish DVR will be easier to use, although I haven't tried Window's 7 yet. The problem with regular capture cards is they won't record the Dish encrypted channels which I why I mentioned the component capture card.

PS3 will play blu-rays great, and its capable of streaming audio from a computer. The video could be a problem though as PS3 won't play Hulu.

We seem to get weekly request for HTPCs, but there is really nothing out there that I can recommend. Everything is way to expensive and more for the upper class market. What do you think, should we start selling some?

Hi - glad to be here!

I am swimming in the options and details of integrated home network/HTPC. Yak!

I am not a builder, so I am looking for advice on basic off the shelf components to do what I want to do - if that is possible.

I have satellite internet (Wild Blue) and Dish Network with a DVR. I am setting up wireless in-house for just a laptop (Win 7 in a couple of weeks) and a desktop (XP) at the moment, will add a netbook soon. I do audio performance recording on the desktop. It utilizes a largge external drive for audio files. I have a 2008 Sony 52W LCD tv with HDMI input. Currently have a standard Onkyo amplifier running front and back channel stereo speakers. I don't care too much about surround sound.

Here are functions I would like to have:

Use an HTPC in place of the DVR for recording (watch one, record one same time?)
Live Pause is nice.
Play Blu-Ray video from disc.
Access internet streaming video and radio.
Play mp3 and wav files from the desktop recordings through the main sound system.
Occasionally use the Sony as my laptop monitor.

Am I crazy? Ahead of the products available? Is a PS3 sufficient?

Thanks, all!

mrHTN, thanks for the quick reply! No, no AGP slots. There are:

3 PCI
1 PCIex1
1 PCIex8
1 PCIex16 (occupied by the dual-head HDMI for the two monitors)

I was hesitant to put one monitor on digital and the other on analog, since I think you wind up with potentially different resolutions, but I can check on that.

I was thinking I'd get another straight PCI dual-head card, either VGA or HDMI, and use it for the monitors (since I'm not doing gaming or any graphics-intensive stuff). That would free up the Radeon XT HD2600 in the PCIe x16 slot for the HDTV (with one HDMI port going unused) for the HDTV.

Can you see any issues with this reasoning? I shouldn't have any problems finding a "regular" PCI video card with dual output, right?

Thanks,
Don

I never had to run 3 monitors off a single computer before, but you're probably going to need a second video card. The question is can you find a way to get it working with your current motherboard. I think your going to be forced to use the PCIex16 slot as a video card for the HDTV mostly due to HDCP capability only being in newer PCIe video cards. You could use the second video out for the second monitor. Now for the third monitor, does your motherboard have a built-in video card (probably VGA out)? If not, then a second video card will need to be installed. What slots do you have available? Any of them AGP?

I currently have a purpose-built HTPC that is about 4 years old and has served me well. I had it hooked up to a 42" Panny plasma at 720p. The Panny is gone and is being replaced with an LG 55" HDTV, which will be hooked up to Verizon cable as well as a computer. Primary purpose of this display (via the PC) is watching movies from networked storage, surfing, music, etc. (I want to eliminate the HTPC from my home network setup.)

I also currently have a Dell XPS 420 with an ATI Radeon supporting dual HDMI monitors. The video card is occupying the only PCIe x16 slot in the Dell box.

What I wish to do is:

1. Eliminate the HTPC.
2. Run the dual displays AND the HDTV from the Dell XPS.

But... What's my best bet for doing this? I want full HD from another video card to support the new LCD HDTV, but I also want to be able to run the dual monitor setup as it currently is. With only one PCIex16 slot in that machine, how do I proceed, since I need (basically, as I understand it) 3 HDMI outputs but only have one PCIex16 slot. I'm not certain how vital it is that the dual monitors run out of that slot, but I imagine it would be far better if the HDTV did, correct?

Any assistance/advice would be very much appreciated!

Don
