I personally like how its organized by the device, and not the rooms. I have a 3 bedroom house so no reason to organize by rooms here.

Solved the MIOS light naming issue. Went into the device and changed the name on the 'Advanced' tab, exit, save. Refresh hTn and the names are now recognized.

As for the Thermostats, I am hoping you plan to add multiples similar to the other tabs?

All in all, hTn is a nice looking application for Android. A bit more user friendly GUI compared to HomeBuddy. HB works fine, just text, no graphics.

Most automation programs organize the devices by the room, but we felt it was easier to use if it was organized by lights, sensors, or the paticular device. One of the reasons why is that AutoHTN can also be used away from home and where the user is not in a specific room. What does everyone think? Do you prefer the automation devices organized by the device or by the room?

Thanks for the input raskell. The thermostat defaults to the first one for now. For the lights, not sure why the names are coming in diffrent for MIOS. We'll look into it and post back here.

Just downloaded this app and gave it a preliminary test. In my test network, I have three dimmable lights. Two of them read in as 'Dimmable light' instead of their MIOS names. They turn on/off perfectly and they are in the same order as on the MIOS home page. A bit odd that only one of them brought the name across. More to look into.

Scenes read across fine. The A/C Heat screen seems to default to one thermostat. (I have five configured, i.e.: lots of zones). Again, no designations read across from Vera2 but I can tell by the settings that it grabbed the Office set poits. All in all, the GUI looks good and the functionality works. Perhaps some additional feedback from more users will get this post rolling.

It looks like the Polk speakers are still cone-based speakers. The Onsia speakers are transducer speakers, so they use distributed vibrations over a flat surface rather than the vibrating cone used by conventional speakers. In essence, the Onsia speakers, at least the in-wall ones, use the entire wall as an amplifier. Onsia's website has some good information about the difference.

Thanks for the input!

I don't have Onsia speakers, but I have some Polk Audio RC55i In-wall speakers. They sound pretty good. I don't think in-wall speakers will ever sound as good as tower speakers, but you can't beat the fact that they are hidden. I'm happy with them.

On a trip to Lowe's a while back, I came across a display of Onsia's flat-panel speakers. The display wasn't terribly informative since they didn't let you choose to listen to one speaker over the others, but I really loved the idea of completely hiding my home theater speaker system, and perhaps my entire home audio system, in the walls. They have three types of speakers: In-wall, which can handle 50W RMS, and in-ceiling and in-frame, which can each handle 25W RMS.

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with installing/listening to these (or perhaps more generically with NXT audio technology in general), and what your impressions are.

We've been focused on Vera with one of the main reason being how inexpensive it is. They also have software coming out for PCs, but its still in development now.

Hi,

I'm keen on home automation, but the cost gets me down.

I have an old PC that I want to use as a server, and for starters I want to just control a set of curtains. What API & wireless protocol should I be looking into for my devices?

Previously I've made Bluetooth & ZigBee devices (a few lights & a kettle), but I'm looking to go more "standards centric" both for portability & so that other people can easily understand & contribute other device implementations.

Is the AutoHTN source available?

Cheers,
Greg

Sounds like you want the satellite box audio out connected to both the TV and receiver. If you have a HDMI equipped receiver and satellite box, then you can run the HDMI from the satellite box to the receiver and use HDMI for audio when using the receiver. When using the TV, you can use the red/white audio out from the satellite box, and run that signal to the TV. Then it would be a matter of turning the volume down/up on the TV or receiver depending on which one you are using.

However, some satellite boxes will turn off the analog (red/white connectors) audio if HDMI is being used so the above setup may not work. If that’s the case, then most receivers have analog audio output which you can run to the TV. This would require the receiver to still be on, but you can mute the volume and turn on the TV volume.

Hope this helps.

Would it be possible, for example, to have it set the thermostat to a certain temperature if it detects someone downstairs, and another (colder) temperature if it detects someone upstairs? Maybe also a warmer temp. when no one is home?

The first step is to get a controller. There are many different types out there depending on how much you want to spend. Full systems from Creston or Control 4 are available, but will cost you. I have a Vera unit at my house because it was relatively inexpensive and it works with Z-wave or Insteon devices which could be found anywhere. The thermostat I have at my house is Trane Z-wave device too, but there are many different ones available.
On the Android side, we should have a beta version of AutoHTN available which does control Thermostats. The beta version of AutoHTN will only work with Vera.
