Sounds like you want the satellite box audio out connected to both the TV and receiver. If you have a HDMI equipped receiver and satellite box, then you can run the HDMI from the satellite box to the receiver and use HDMI for audio when using the receiver. When using the TV, you can use the red/white audio out from the satellite box, and run that signal to the TV. Then it would be a matter of turning the volume down/up on the TV or receiver depending on which one you are using.

However, some satellite boxes will turn off the analog (red/white connectors) audio if HDMI is being used so the above setup may not work. If that’s the case, then most receivers have analog audio output which you can run to the TV. This would require the receiver to still be on, but you can mute the volume and turn on the TV volume.

Hope this helps.

My question: what are the different wiring / connection options so I do not have to have the receiver on to hear the audio. Sometimes I want the audio to come through the TV (news, weather). But when I watch movies on satellite or blue ray, I want the sound system on.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Can you try another SCART cable for the Sky box? How about a diffrent audio only cable such as optical or digital coaxial? Lastly, did you check the settings on your Sky box?

Okay I had to get a new tv recently as our old one stopped working.Replaced with a very similar 7 year old sony 32" crt.
The problem was the wifee dismantled everything and I had to try and wire back together.
We have -
AFOREMENTIONED SONY TV(THREE SCARTS)
SKY PLUS(2 SCART SOCKETS)
PHILLIPS SURROUND SOUND SYSTEM WITH INBUILT DVD PLAYER(1 SCART)
PHILLIPS DVD RECORDER(2 SCARTS)
Everything working fine EXCEPT the surround sound is now distorting when watching Sky.To my ears its fine when playing dvds directly from the surround sound inbuilt dvd player indicating the speakers are still fine so I am guessing it is to do with the way its wired up. Can anyone tell me how to wire this system so that surround sound is functioning clearly with all items please!!
Really,really appreciate any help guys

One thing that could change my suggestion above is your cable connection. Do you have a cable box? What kind of service do you get from your cable company? Cable companies encode their signal with QAM and usually the only thing that could decode the QAM is cable boxes or cable cards. Tuner cards won't be able to decode QAM, and I bet the DVD player with a tuner card won't either.

There's not many cheap switch boxes out there that will convert multiple signals to VGA. I'm thinking your best approach here would be to use the PC as a DVD player and a cable tuner. I'm assuming you already have DVD-Rom drive and probably some software to play DVDs. Also, there are plenty of reasonably priced cable tuner cards you could add to your PC. If this works, then you could simply connect the VGA out from the PC to the projector and the optical out of the PC to the sound system receiver.

Depends on the DVD player, some of them covert the input signal and some don't. I haven't seen many DVD players with coax-in and coax-out so I'm not sure if yours will. Is it a combined VCR/DVD player?

You would need a converter to get component to VGA. A simple cable won't work unless the VGA input can take component, which I've seen sometimes with front projectors. Make sure to get a converter which automatically converts different video formats.

Also is it o.k. to use one of those cables that convert component to vga? I've read that they aren't the best choice. What is the best way to take video from a dvd/tuner and out put it to VGA?
