Most automation programs organize the devices by the room, but we felt it was easier to use if it was organized by lights, sensors, or the paticular device. One of the reasons why is that AutoHTN can also be used away from home and where the user is not in a specific room. What does everyone think? Do you prefer the automation devices organized by the device or by the room?

On a trip to Lowe's a while back, I came across a display of Onsia's flat-panel speakers. The display wasn't terribly informative since they didn't let you choose to listen to one speaker over the others, but I really loved the idea of completely hiding my home theater speaker system, and perhaps my entire home audio system, in the walls. They have three types of speakers: In-wall, which can handle 50W RMS, and in-ceiling and in-frame, which can each handle 25W RMS.

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with installing/listening to these (or perhaps more generically with NXT audio technology in general), and what your impressions are.

Hi,

I'm keen on home automation, but the cost gets me down.

I have an old PC that I want to use as a server, and for starters I want to just control a set of curtains. What API & wireless protocol should I be looking into for my devices?

Previously I've made Bluetooth & ZigBee devices (a few lights & a kettle), but I'm looking to go more "standards centric" both for portability & so that other people can easily understand & contribute other device implementations.

Is the AutoHTN source available?

Cheers,
Greg

My question: what are the different wiring / connection options so I do not have to have the receiver on to hear the audio. Sometimes I want the audio to come through the TV (news, weather). But when I watch movies on satellite or blue ray, I want the sound system on.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Okay I had to get a new tv recently as our old one stopped working.Replaced with a very similar 7 year old sony 32" crt.
The problem was the wifee dismantled everything and I had to try and wire back together.
We have -
AFOREMENTIONED SONY TV(THREE SCARTS)
SKY PLUS(2 SCART SOCKETS)
PHILLIPS SURROUND SOUND SYSTEM WITH INBUILT DVD PLAYER(1 SCART)
PHILLIPS DVD RECORDER(2 SCARTS)
Everything working fine EXCEPT the surround sound is now distorting when watching Sky.To my ears its fine when playing dvds directly from the surround sound inbuilt dvd player indicating the speakers are still fine so I am guessing it is to do with the way its wired up. Can anyone tell me how to wire this system so that surround sound is functioning clearly with all items please!!
Really,really appreciate any help guys

Hello everyone.

I have the following query and would be very grateful for some advice.

I am currently building an HTPC with an Asus M3N78-EM motheboard and a Hauppage Nova T-500 card for freeview and a Hauppage Nova HDS2 for viewing freesat.

The HTPC will be wired up to my LCD TV in the living room via HDMI.

I have three other televisions in my house - one using regular analogue (TV1), one with a freesat box attached (TV2) and one with a freeview box attached (TV3).

My question: Is it possible to wire all three televisions so that I can either 1. watch on each television what ever is playing from the HTPC and 2. On(TV2) choose to use the freesat box and get the full range of channels (so using the freesat signal that is passing through the HTPC) and 3. On (TV3) choose to use the freeview box and get the full range of channels (so using the freeview signal that has passed through my HTPC)?

My guess would be that there might be a distribution amp that combines the various signals coming out of the and sends them all to each TV via single wire, but I have no idea if such a thing exists.

Hope this is clear.

Many thanks.

This thing is probably 20 years old, 15" sub in an end table type enclosure, I bought it with a SAE Amp from Crutchfield. My question is: why are there 5watt 8 ohm ceramic square non conductive? resistors across the speaker terminals? I assume this was to limit the output signal as this sub was passive and you could connect your front speakers and the sub all from one stereo channel. Do you think that's what they are for?
P.S.
How many Watts do you think I should look for in a new Amp to power a sub that size?
Thanks

I'm looking to achieve a low budget home theater setup. I have a Dell 2300mp projector that has the following for video input:VGA in(D-sub),S-video, and composite video. What I want to connect to the projector is DVD,PC, and Cable TV. I realize that the best video I can get out of this projector will be by using the VGA input, so I assume I need some type of switch box that will allow the PC,DVD, and Cable input and a single VGA output? Is there such a thing? I also believe that I need a DVD player with built in tuner to handle the Cable TV. For the audio I plan on using a surround sound receiver.
I know the low tech option would be to run RCA cables into a cheap receiver which I've done in the past and has good enough surround sound for me. My main issue is how to get the sound from the pc to the receiver so I can watch AVI converted DVDs and be able to output the audio through the receiver to surround speakers. I know it would be a LOT easier to connect everything if I had all the latest equipment but I don't have any cash to stick into this.

If I have a dvd player with built in tuner and I run cable tv into it with a coaxial cable do I have to use the coaxial out to receive the cable tv signal or can I use the component red green blue cables? I guess I always assumed those only output the dvd video not the tv signal?
